The 52nd Flugplatzkerb Gelnhausen, held from July 10 to July 12, 2026, concluded as a historic milestone, drawing thousands of spectators and delivering an unprecedented lineup of elite international and military aviators. Organized by the Aero-Club Gelnhausen, the event successfully fused a classic German folk festival ("Kerb") with a world-class aviation spectacle. Brilliant summer weather provided a perfect backdrop for the highlights of the weekend: an awe-inspiring, poetic masterclass by the Royal Jordanian Falcons and the raw tactical power of the German Air Force (Luftwaffe).
The Sensation: Royal Jordanian Falcons
Marking their highly anticipated return to Germany as part of their 2026 European Airshow Tour, the Royal Jordanian Falcons delivered what many considered the most flawless, artistic display of the entire weekend. As national ambassadors of peace and friendship, the team’s elite pilots demonstrated why they are one of the world's most respected formation teams.
The Precision Display
Operating a four-ship fleet of ultra-agile Extra 330LX aircraft, the Falcons executed a sequence characterized by razor-sharp geometry and extreme discipline:
- Ultra-Tight Formation Aerobatics: Slicing through the sky with minimal wing-tip separation, the team performed perfectly synchronized loops, steep banking turns, and slow roll maintaining an impossibly tight diamond shape.
- Heart-Stopping Crossings: Splitting away from the main formation, the solo pilots performed high-speed, head-on opposition passes and gravity-defying vertical climbs directly over the center of the airfield.
- A Golden Landmark: The 2026 season marks exactly 50 years of Precision since the team was founded in 1976 under the vision of King Hussein bin Talal. To honor this milestone, the team was officially welcomed by local dignitaries, and the Jordanian pilots permanently marked the occasion by signing the Golden Book of the City of Gelnhausen.
Military Power: The Luftwaffe
For the first time at Gelnhausen, the Luftwaffe made its presence felt with massive overflights that generated incredible excitement on the ground.
- Tactical Overflights: Flying as part of regular military operations integrated into the weekend, a Eurofighter Typhoon (sporting the striking Bavarian Tigers Neuburg livery) and a massive Airbus A400M Atlas transport aircraft performed immense, low-altitude flyovers. The ear-splitting roar of the Eurofighter's afterburners was an absolute crowd-favorite.
- The Ultimate Heritage Formation: In a historic display on Friday only, the modern Eurofighter joined up in the sky with three iconic WWII warbirds—the Supermarine Spitfire, P-51D Mustang, and F4U Corsair—creating a breathtaking contrast of aviation eras.
Historic Warbirds & General Aviation
The 200-meter-long flight line gave spectators a front-row seat to an expansive timeline of flight history:
- The Flying Legends Fleet: Pristine warbirds, including the P-51D Mustang "Frances Dell", and the inverted gull-wing F4U Corsair "Devotion", thrilled vintage aviation enthusiasts with dynamic and sweeping close-passes.
- International Fly-In & Aerobatics: Over 50 unique aircraft types packed the grass airfield. Local favorite Toni Eichhorn performed aerobatics in his Extra 330LT, while Germany's father-and-son Formation Team Niebergall executed an elegant synchronized routine in their SIAI-Marchetti SF-260s.
Dutch Aviation shines
While the Eurofighter Typhoon and the Royal Jordanian Falcons grabbed the headlines, two Dutch formation teams brought pure aviation nostalgia to the skies of Gelnhausen.
- The Fokker Four team delivered a masterclass in elegant formation flying. Operating four historic Fokker S-11 Instructor trainers, they captivated the crowd with their smooth, synchronized maneuvers, showcasing the golden age of Dutch aviation craftsmanship.
- Adding a more thunderous energy to the weekend, the Dutch Thunder Yaks put on a spectacular display of precision aerobatics. Flying their powerful Yakovlev Yak-52 aircraft, the team wowed spectators with tight formations, dynamic fly-bys, and the unmistakable, deep roar of their radial engines.
Together, these two teams perfectly represented the Netherlands, proving that Dutch historic aviation is alive, kicking, and incredibly spectacular to watch.
Ground Exhibits & Evening Festivities
On the ground, the festival combined aviation education with a lively regional fairground.
- Exhibitions & Charity: The Aero-Club Gelnhausen hosted information stands detailing glider, ultralight, and private pilot training programs. Adding to the spectacle, the 501st Legion German Garrison (Star Wars costuming group) paraded the grounds under the motto "Bad guys doing good," raising significant funds for the Amber Children's and Youth Hospice in Hanau.
- Massive Scale Models: Prior to the full-scale displays, giant-scale remote-controlled model aircraft put on spectacular flight demonstrations.
- Night Spectacular: On Saturday night, local cover band Helium6 rocked a packed open-air crowd. As darkness fell, the traditional "Ballonglühen" (Night Glow) illuminated hot-air balloons in choreography with music, which was instantly followed by a massive, pyrotechnic firework show over the main runway.
