Air Legend Melun Villaroche Airshow France - 5-6 September 2026
A Masterclass in Warbird Heavy Metal
Melun-Villaroche has proved once more its reputation as one of the best warbird gatherings in Mainland Europe. Air Legend 2026 delivered an unforgettable spectacle, blending historical preservation of piston-engines with modern jet power. While the entire lineup was stellar, this year’s edition will be remembered for its unprecedented "heavy metal" performances and a highly anticipated debut. This review covers the Saturday program only.
The Twin-Engine A-26 Invader’s Debut
The absolute crown jewel of the weekend was the first-time airshow appearance of the Douglas A-26 Invader in France. Watching this sleek, menacing twin-engine attack bomber taxi onto the tarmac sent shivers down my spine. In the air, the Invader proved it was built for speed and aggression. Its low-level, high-speed passes showcased the clean, powerful lines that made it a legend. The deep, synchronized hum of its Pratt & Whitney engines was worth the visit alone.
The Douglas A-26 Invader is the only American bomber to fly combat missions in three major wars:
- World War II: Introduced late in the conflict (1944), it flew devastating ground-attack missions over Europe and the Pacific.
- The Korean War: Re-designated as the B-26, it became the primary night-intruder and interdiction aircraft, crippling enemy supply lines.
- The Vietnam War: Modified into the heavy-duty B-26K Counter-Invader, it was deployed for secretive night attacks along the Ho Chi Minh Trail.
Additionally, the French Air Force flew the A-26 extensively in the 1950s in Indochina and Algeria, making its appearance at a French airshow like Air Legend incredibly historically significant.
The Tale of the Two Corsairs
In a brilliant piece of scheduling, the crowd witnessed a fascinating contrast of engineering under the "Corsair" name.
First came the vintage airpower: a breathtaking formation flight featuring a Chance Vought F4U Corsair, newly painted in the colors of the French Navy, flying alongside two modern Rafale Marine jets. It was an extraordinary sight.
Then came the modern twist. A massive Airbus A330neo, operated by Corsair Airlines, performed some incredible, low-level flybys. The sight of a giant commercial widebody rocking its wings right along the flightline—contrasting sharply with the WWII fighter sharing its name—created an unforgettable Air Legend memory.
Cold War Jet Fire and Home Team Pride
The piston power was brilliantly broken up by the searing heat of early jet engineering. The afterburner passes of the MiG-17 (Lim-5) contrasted sharply with the clean, elegant swept-wing lines of the F-86 Sabre, bringing classic Cold War fighters to life.
To top it all off, the home crowd was brought to its feet by the razor-sharp tactical displays of the French Navy’s Rafale Marine, the Mirage 2000s of Couteau Delta, and the flawless tricolor smoke formations of the Patrouille de France. The French Army Light Aviation (ALAT) completed the modern combat element with dynamic tactical displays by the EC-665 Tiger attack helicopter and the NH-90 Caïman transport helicopter.
Air Legend 2026 Highlights
The flying program at Melun-Villaroche provided an incredible journey through time, ranging from the roar of World War II radials to high-energy aerobatics:
- B-17G Flying Fortress ("Sally B"): Europe’s only remaining airworthy B-17 brought a massive presence, filling the sky with its iconic four-engine silhouette.
- P-51D Mustang Trio: A legendary lineup featuring "Marinell", "Miss AvA", and "Little Rebel".
- PBY-5A Catalina: The massive twin-engine flying boat showed off surprisingly graceful low-speed handling over the tarmac.
- Caudron-Renault C.460 Rafale Replica: A beautiful nod to French aviation racing history, this sleek blue replica flew in formation with a Beechcraft Staggerwing.
- Douglas C-53D Skytrooper: This aircraft is a remarkable living piece of WWII history. The beautifully restored F-HVED 'Gruesome' (USAAF serial number 42-68810) is seen here in its iconic D-Day colors.
- DC-3 & Beech 17: Flying as part of the "Classic Formation", these historic transports provided a gorgeous look at vintage twin-engine logistics.
- The Spitfires: A stunning pair of rare, clipped-wing Spitfires performed a dynamic formation routine. This included the Supermarine Spitfire Mk.Vb (EP120)—flown by The Fighter Collection and powered by a Merlin engine—and the Supermarine Spitfire Mk.XIV (RM927), a late-war fighter-reconnaissance variant owned by the W Air Collection, powered by a Rolls-Royce Griffon engine turning a five-blade propeller.
- The Royal Jordanian Falcons: In a historic milestone celebrating their 50th anniversary, the team made their first-ever appearance at Air Legend as the event's first foreign military participant. Flying their beautiful Extra 330LX aircraft, they delivered an incredibly smooth and tight formation display.
- Team Raven: One of the largest civilian display teams brought their RV-8 Ravens to the show. Their massive multi-ship formation specialized in synchronized crosses, swirling smoke maneuvers, and sweeping close-proximity breaks that kept everyone looking straight up.
- Équipe de Voltige de l'Armée de l'Air: The French Air Force's elite aerobatic team provided a masterclass in precision flying. Performing in high-performance Extra 330SC aircraft, they highlighted the absolute pinnacle of military pilot training.
The True Spirit of Air Legend
The true spirit of Air Legend 2026 lay in its ability to turn history into a living spectacle across different eras. Although the aviation reenactors of Pilotes de Guerre were sorely missed on the flightline this year, Flight Ops Director Iza Bazin succeeded in gathering a remarkable collection of legendary aircraft at Melun.
From the vintage Vought F4U Corsair to the modern Airbus A330neo, the organizers proved that the love for flight transcends generations. Air Legend 2026 didn't just display history—it made it. By securing the monumental debut of the three-war veteran Douglas A-26 Invader and filling the skies with legendary aircraft, the show remains one of the ultimate annual pilgrimages for anyone who lives for aviation history and the smell of aviation fuel.
The next edition of the Air Legend is September 11-12, 2027
